Mercedes TV Spot Shows Evolution of C-Class with Cool Tear-down

By -

Although it used to be called the ‘Baby Benz,’ the C-Class is truly all grown up now.

If you go back in time and tell the early designers of the W202 C-Class about the features of the current W205 chassis, they’d surely be impressed. Mentioning all the capabilities that the COMAND and MBUX systems would leave them in wonder, and the active safety systems would no doubt amaze them. But much like how the current C-Class is a leader, the original was the leader in its time, too.

Mercedes has decided to showcase that with the unique commercial above featured on Mercedes-Benz’ official YouTube page. It depicts a driver of a C280 Sport having the car “evolve” around him as he drives down the road. Instead of morphing through the generations of C-Class, a mobile team of mechanics and engineers disassemble the W202, and assemble a W205, all while the driver remains in place.

c-class evolution

Although it is a bit of fantasy, it still shows how Mercedes is always pursuing perfection with the culmination of their efforts on display in the new 2019 model. In the video, it is summed up nicely; “because to be the best, is to never ever stop making it better.”

Still, as impressive as the new models are, it’s the originals that we owe a lot to. Who would have known how deep AMG’s involvement at Mercedes would become if we didn’t have the C36 AMG? Who would have known what kind of madmen were within the engineering team if the segment-creating C43 was never put into production? What kind of racing history would have to be re-written if the C-class never went DTM racing? Keeping those things in mind, the W202 is a very significant car to us. Though its safe to say that the 2019 models and beyond will carry on that tradition.
