Mercedes S-Class W140 Concept Shows What Could Have Been

The ’80s were an interesting time in the world, least notably because it was when I was born. In the automotive realm of things, life was much more exciting. Neon colors and sharp edges dazzled your eyes, while synthesizers and saxophones buzzed your ear drums. Additionally, computer and technology advancements had car companies seeking out ways to make their fleets ever-more efficient. Given that outlandish designs were the norm, some very interesting shapes emerged for the sake of low drag.

In the interest of aerodynamics, this particular prototype had wheel covers. While they looked cool on older American cars from the ’50s, and maybe a few French cars, on the S-class, it just seems… different. Not odd, just different.

I’m going to go out on a limb and take a stab at why this design wasn’t picked: if this were a running prototype, and they did any practicality tests on it, especially winter simulations, I can only imagine how badly snow would pack up inside the wheel wells. In the end, they wisely chose the design that allows the passerby to see both the front and back wheels.
