Mercedes Issues Safety Recall For E-Class, CLA & CLS Cars

2018 Mercedes E400 Coupe recall

Latest Mercedes-Benz recall stems from an occupancy sensor calibration issue and latch installation.

According to a recent report by Cars.com, several Mercedes-Benz sedan, coupe and convertible models are under a safety recall. Sensors in the seat that detect when a child seat is present might not be functioning properly, potentially allowing the front air-bag to activate while a child seat is secured in the front passenger seat. The sensors are built into the seat foam and detect if there is no occupant, a small occupant, or an adult. Mercedes calls this the “Occupant classification system.”

Affected models include sedans and coupes. In the E-class line include the E300 with and without 4Matic, E400 4Matic and E400 convertibles, and E46 4Matic and E63S 4Matic models. CLA250, CLA250 4Matic and CLA45 AMG models are the next round of affected 2018 models. The only 2019 model affected is the CLS450.

Convertibles aren’t in the clear either. They might have the seas sensor calibrated correctly, but their Latch system for a child seat might have been improperly installed. Cars.com doesn’t say it’ll come off it in so many words, but instead says it may “partially detach from the body.”

But there might not be much need for you to worry. Only 470 vehicles in total are affected, and even if yours is part of the recall, repairs are done for free. Sedans and coupes will get a new seat cushion, and convertibles will have the Latch system inspected and addressed.

October 3 is when you’ll officially hear from Mercedes-Benz if one of your cars is affected, but if curiosity is getting the better of you, a call to Mercedes at 800-367-6372 should set you at ease.
