Vintage Mercedes Unimog Resurrected to Perfection

Vintage truck reminds us why Mercedes restoration projects are so special.

Classic restoration projects certainly are nothing new in the world of Mercedes-Benz. And yet, they tend to hold a different cache than many “typical” rebuilds.

There are few better examples of that idea than this Mercedes-Benz Unimog 4×4, which has been fully restored back to its original state. This vintage “406” Series, one of only 353 models built between 1974 and 1986, is quite the restoration project for a number of reasons, as detailed in a report by a designboom.

For one, it’s a cool piece of Mercedes history, especially in that wild blue. The Unimog originally started out as vehicle used to tow aircraft. However, one of its most famous claims to fame is winning the Paris-Dakar rally by accident in 1982, and again in 1985. As the story goes, the Unimog was actually serving as a support vehicle during the races. But over the years, it became a major contender in the rally in the truck class. And that’s a trend that has continued.

Some of the most unique features of the Unimog are the wheels and its flexible chassis frame. The frame is an integral part of the suspension that made the truck a trusted workhorse for many. The Unimog also includes a 24-volt battery, a switch for all-wheel drive, a hydraulic front, an auxiliary unit sprocket drive, and an installed charger with integrated dust boxes.
