New Mercedes SL AMG Model Names Leak, AMG 73 Confirmed

Mercedes SL spy names

Six different SL AMG models are penned, including the rumored ’73’ model which could pack 800 hybridized horsepower.

AMG plans on having a handful of AMG variants in the next generation SL. This includes models from the 6 cylinder “43” all the way to the turbo V8 hybrid “73e.” This means the AMG models would proliferate the SL lineup and could make up a majority of the line. With the SL’s sporting pedigree and heritage, it seems fitting.

A Mercedes-fans.de report indicates that with the new names outlined, the SL will no longer be available with a V12. That’s something we saw coming, sadly.

The list seen at the top here shows 4MATIC is planned on all but the SL 43 AMG. The SL 53e and SL 73e are indicative of hybrid power units. We’re a bit stuck on what an SL 55 might be, so we welcome our readers to help identify the power unit that would be in that vehicle. Mercedes no longer names models based on displacement, and instead uses tiers. The current “53” models make 430 horsepower. Current “63” models make 603 horsepower. Would a “55” land in the 500 horsepower range? Logical progression says so. Motor 1 has leaked several spy photos here.

The chassis designations of 232 are correct for the next generation SL. Everything after the decimal would seemingly be an indicator of the driveline, and all the 6 cylinder models end in “232.45X” so we would assume 232.48X would be V8 models.

Motor 1 also has interesting news from one of the top shot callers at AMG. Tobias Moers has said the SL’s luxury boulevard cruiser look will change, and in turn be sporty. We see that as a direct shot at the Aston Martin line of convertibles, and a turn away from something like a Bentley Continental GT convertible. If the SL retains its unique retractable hard top, It’ll be an answer to everyone’s needs. If further reports suggest a 2+2 model, then it’ll bridge the gap between the SL and the AMG GT 4-door. We haven’t a clue what kind of top would be on a 2+2 model.

Of course, the naming change is not as drastic as what we saw with the changing letters vs numbers first. But the changes under the skin will be just as dramatic.
