New Mercedes-Benz S-Class Drives Itself Off the Assembly Line

Mercedes-Benz Board Member gives a unique view of the carmaker’s advances in the world of autonomous technology.

How do you make a big statement when rolling out new autonomous vehicle technology?

Well, one way is to create a video showcasing the car driving itself off the assembly line.

Clever, right?

Then again, we are talking about Mercedes Benz, a company that has a knack for coming up with some pretty interesting ways to highlight its new technology.

The vehicle in this case? The new 2018 Mercedes-Benz S-Class, which is packed with a lot more autonomous tech than previous models from the German nameplate, as detailed in a report by The Drive.

The video highlights the rollout of its new flagship sedan and features Mercedes-Benz Board Member Markus Schäfer providing some insight on the new S-Class. Specifically, going into detail about its improved safety and connectivity features. But it’s when Schäfer hops into the front passenger seat of the sedan that we get a sense of the kind of advances made on the new vehicle.

It’s all pretty wild when you think about it. I mean, who would’ve guessed some 20 years ago, that in 2017 automobiles would be fully capable of driving themselves off the assembly line.

Sure, there was probably somebody, somewhere, that saw this entire autonomous thing unfolding. Typically things like this have been in the works for years before consumers like us even get first wind of the idea. Still, you get the sense that it’s still evolving a lot faster than many anticipated.

That said, it’s pretty clear from the video below, that Mercedes-Benz is working to stay at the forefront of autonomous tech.
