Now’s The Time to Buy An AMG GT

AMG GT

It’s definitely a buyer’s market for the AMG GT, and that includes both generations of the sleek coupe.

At MBWorld, we understand the word depreciation. It attacks some Mercedes models more than others. S-class models can be had at half cost just a few years after being brand spankin’ new. The AMG GT coupe is now turning affordable, too.

We’ll put our main focus on the first generation AMG GT, the C190. From 2016 to 2022, the C190 marks a distinct return to super coupe status for AMG. But the GT found itself filling some big shoes. Those shoes were re-filled with 4 liters of M178 turbocharged V8. As opposed to just being a coupe version of the SL, the C190 shared almost no chassis components with the R232 roadster. There was no cross-shopping here.

Entry level cars are uniquely appealing. The GT and GT S are both now nearly a decade old, but we feel they have aged extremely well. Performance wise, they can stand toe-to-toe with just about any other performance coupe of the era. At the Nurburgring, the AMG GT S lapped in 7:33, which puts it in some very fast company. It’s right on par with a 997 GT3 RS. That’s not bad for a car you can pick up for less than $70,000.

But, an SLS it is not. This is a good thing, and a bad thing. It is good because it means that you can bag one of these for less than half its original MSRP. They went for about $130,000 back when new. And adjusted for inflation, that’s closer to one third the original cost of the car. You’ll also want to baby an SLS and keep it in perfect shape. Where as the C190, you can thrash around and have fun because it’s not $250,000.

Another good reason to pick up a C190 is that they are arguably better than a C192. Well to some. Highlighting the differences is quite easy. We did that a while ago, and the premise is clear. The new AMG GT is a better GT car. The old AMG GT is a better sports car even if it is “slower.”
