This Old ‘Sleeper’ Mercedes-Benz is Full of Surprises

This Mercedes-Benz is perfect for deposed despots who need to make a quick getaway.

A “sleeper,” by its very definition, is an otherwise unassuming car capable of substantially higher performance than would otherwise be expected. Some would lump many four-door AMG models into this this category, but by the strictest definition of the term, their large wheels and aggressive body kits (however subtle) preclude them from being sleepers. We’re more inclined to call them “nappers” — they’d only fool the most clueless of would-be street racers.

He bought his first car at age 14 -- a 1978 Ford Mustang II -- and since then he’s amassed an impressive and diverse collection of cars, trucks, and motorcycles, including a 1996 Ford Mustang SVT Mystic Cobra (#683) and a classic air-cooled Porsche 911.
In addition to writing about cars and wrenching on them in his spare time, he enjoys playing music (drums and ukulele), building model cars, and tending to his chickens.
