Project Mondo G Turns The G-Wagen Into A Puffy Jacket
Moncler and Mercedes have teamed up to imagine what a G-wagon would look like as a big puffy jacket. It’s called the Mondo G.
No, it’s not a lunar rover. But the styling is a bit out of this world. No, instead it is called the Mondo G, and is made in conjunction with Mercedes-Benz and fashion company Moncler.
Moncler is famous for making big shiny puffer jackets. And so they’ve given the same treatment to the G-wagen. Oversized everything is the name of the game here. And Mercedes has no problem saying it’s art for the sake of art. Mercedes claim the “reimagined G-Class enters a new dimension where earthly rules are distorted, and a new reality is imagined through art and technology.”
While a bit confusing at first, it eventually brought us a bit of nostalgia. It reminds us of the wild and funky early 2000’s concept cars which had to follow exactly zero rules. Outlandish, creative, fun, weird, and deep into the sci-fi craze of the early 2000’s. And the Mondao G is exactly all of those things.
Still instantly recognizable as a G-wagon, this concept goes extreme. Instead of a roof and hatch, you have a chrome coat and zipper. You also have chrome puffer style tires, likely meant to look like overland tires. Though in outer space they’d be over-crater tires? We digress.
Mercedes also proclaims that as brands, they and Moncler “push the boundaries of their respective segments.” The G-class represents that well. It started out purely as a “correct tool for the job” and over time transformed into something different all together. Much in the same way, Moncler makes coats that act as a coat, and keep you warm, but they, like the G-wagon are now more of a status symbol.
What we can expect, perhaps, is a special edition version of the G-wagen to come in the future, with a few interesting interior trim appointments. Much in the same way we saw special edition Maybach models not too long ago. Will you ever see a Moncler G-wagen taking on the rough outdoors? Probably not. Much in the same way you probably won’t find a $2,500 Moncler jacket being worn by someone hiking around Mount Baldy.
