D.I.Y.: Replace Multi-Function Switch in Your C209, W203

Disassembled steering column

With this project, there’s no need to overcomplicate the things we overcomplicated.

Turn signals are important. They’re so important that failing to use one at a stop sign can get you a ticket. Thankfully, having the turn signal fail on your car is an extremely rare occurrence. But if you need to replace it, you’ll want to check out this guide.

Let’s get something out-of-the-way real quick here: You will have to handle the airbag. It’s not difficult or dangerous, but there are some key things to remember before handling something that’s pretty much an inflatable Claymore.

Before you even grab any tools to undo parts of the steering wheel, open the driver’s door and disconnect the battery. If you don’t open the door, the window on the 209 won’t drop down to allow the door to open. Ask us how we know.

Next, you’ll want to gather some tools. Some you can improvise with, others you’ll prefer to have. We grabbed 1/4 inch and 3/8 inch ratchets, along with Torx sockets in the size of T10 and T30. You can use those T10 and T30 Torx fittings as bit drivers, as we did, but we did have to use a long-shaft T30 on the final screw that removes the steering column controls. More about that later. Also, grab yourself a narrow flat-head screwdriver, and a 10mm hex bit driver.
