T30 hex bolts for air bag removal

To remove the steering wheel is actually rather easy. Two Torx bolts at the back of the steering wheel can be undone and the front of the steering wheel will easily move forward. Do what you can to support it, and don’t let it hang by the wires.

Air bag electrical connector removal

To remove the connections, disconnect the black connector on top first. Then, disconnect the yellow and green airbag connections. You will have to use that thin flathead screwdriver here. Gently pry the center part of the clip away from the rest of the clip (red arrow above). Then you can simply pull the two clips out by hand. The connections on the airbag are the same color as the clips and are different style left to right, so you don’t have to be worried about which connector goes where. Still, set the airbag aside, somewhere safe.

Next, you’ll want to remove the steering wheel which is held on with one central bolt. This is where the 10mm hex driver will come in handy and you’ll need to have some leverage from a suitable length 3/8 inch ratchet. Be careful to note where the spline markings are on the steering wheel. There are markings on the steering wheel itself and on the shaft. Also, keep in mind that there’s one more electrical connection to take off before fully removing the steering wheel. We nearly forgot this one, which would have broken the connector for the paddle shift. It’s the top white connector with red and black wires as seen below.
