Rumormill: Mercedes’ 911 Carrera Killer Back on Track?
This time, the word comes from Car Magazine. They say it’s code named the C190. It’ll have a smaller V6 along with a full-size, SLS-grade, V8. To me, it’s hypothetical chassis is more interesting that the hypothetical power train. CAR says the SLS’ architecture is fairly flexible. Mercedes should be able to alter the chassis’ dimensions easily. Also, they say Mercedes will be swapping the gullwings for more conventional hinged doors. Conventional doors weigh, and cost, far less than the fancy doors on the SLS.
Considering come some of the spyshots that we’ve seen over the past year, the likely hood of the SLC being a real thing is pretty high. Mercedes has been caught more than once running these SLS look-a-likes under the cover of camouflage. If they do, we’ll likely see several different versions similar to the SLS’ product line. More than likely, the V8 model would be direct competition for the 911. An AMG Model would probably compete in the same price range as the Turbo S.
To me, the prospect of a small V6 coupe from Mercedes is the most interesting part of this equation. What would you think about a Carrera hunting coupe with a transaxle transmission and a trunk? Yeah. Exciting times ahead.
