Mercedes-Benz CLK GTR

This amazing Mercedes-Benz CLK GTR may not be cheap, but it’s a true dream car for those that grew up in the 1990s.

There are more million-dollar cars out there in the world today than ever before, a byproduct of things like inflation and a surging collector car market. But when we saw this incredibly rare Mercedes-Benz CLK GTR pop up for sale on the German site Mobile, we knew that it was going to take a few extra zeroes to bring home. Sure enough, this homologated racer – one of just 25 produced in total – has an asking price of £11,100,000, which translates to around $13,674,978 using today’s exchange rates.

That’s obviously an incredible amount of money to pay for any car, but the Mercedes-Benz CLK GTR is also a pretty incredible machine. A true poster car of its era, the CLK GTR wasn’t cheap to begin with, as it cost a cool $1.5 million when it launched in 1997, making it the most expensive production car ever at that time. On the track, the racing version dominated the FIA GT Championship for two consecutive years, which only added to its lore.

The road-going version was no slouch either, as it came packing a naturally-aspirated 6.9-liter V12 that produces 604 horsepower and 572 pound-feet of torque, which flows to the wheels via a lightning-quick shifting six-speed Xtrac sequential transaxle. Getting to 62 mph takes just 3.8 seconds, while the CLK GTR tops out at 214 mph – all of which are mightily impressive numbers by today’s standards, and simply bonkers for anything built in the 1990s.

Aside from obvious things like safety equipment, the road-going CLK GTR wasn’t terribly different than its racing brethren either, with some softer springs and dampers, along with a higher ride height to make it a bit more comfy to drive on the street. This particular example has 12.300 kilometers on the clock, which equates to a reasonably-high (for a prized hypercar) 7,642 miles. Regardless, even prior to the current explosion in prices, these things were selling for 10 million or so, so the asking price actually seems reasonable, ironically enough.

Unfortunately, that’s still not even close to what most of us can afford to dish out for a vehicle, so the mighty Mercedes-Benz CLK GTR remains as out of reach as it was decades ago, staring at us from a poster on our walls.
