A new competitor - Alpina B5
The Alpina version of the E60 5-series will be released in March 2005 and is called the B5. Under the bonnet there is a 4,4 V8, like the B7, producing about 500 bhp and 700 Nm of torque. The B5 will hit 100 kmh (62.5 mph) in 4.7 seconds and will go on to a topspeed of 300 kmh (188 mph). The B5 is more comfort based than the BMW M5, equipped with a 6-speed Switchtronic automatic and will be available as a sedan and as a touring.

That's just ugly. How do the Bimmer fans keep justifying their cars? I love the perforamnce - but owning a car is more than just performance - or else we'd all be driving dirty *** boxes that go super fast.

Here is my thing. Alpina is an aftermarket company for bimmer. AMG is too but it is also factory honored. Bimmer has something like AMG but that is the M division. Alpina to bmw is like brabus to benz.
How much more do you have to pay on top of f-ing yourself over on a new 5 to get that Alpina? Haha!~! Sorry just my 2 cents...

the 7 is actually decent to me, I guess it's grown. but the 5 and 6 are terrible. Esp. the front of the 6. the 6 is way over priced too...

Hi Benzoboy, I was browsing the thread and found this one.
I though I should clear up som missunderstand you have. That you do not like it is fair enough.
ALPINA is NOT an aftermarked supplier, they are not even a tuning company, they are and has been since 1981 a carproducer like any other car brand. They have their own WIN also.
ALPINA has over the years been an amazing car producer, and have always been in the lead.
The cooperation BMW / ALPINA has been closer and lasted longer than the cooperation between MB and AMG. I am not sure but I do not think BMW is owning any shares at ALPINA, when I asked they said NO.
I remember when we picked up our first 280 E AMG in 1981, we had a discussion with Hans Werner Aufrecht where he said and I quote.
"The main target for AMG is to become for MB what ALPINA is for BMW."
At that time they still had a long way to go, to reach the level of ALPINA.
It took them a long time, but ended up where they are today. Extremly fast, luxurious and comfortable cars. The last years they also have had the edge over ALPINA when it comes to pure power. ALPINA has had several years where they have not gone for the 1. price in power, but are making a nice comback now with the B5 and B7 versions, not to be confused with the brutal I6 Turbo versions also called B7 that was introduced 1979, this became the fastest saloon car of its time, the engine also available in the 6 series Coupe.
+ 330 Hp and a topspeed of +270 kph....
We have to go back to 1994 to find the last ALPINA that had the brutal power, the B10 BiTurbo. At its time the world fastest saloon car, and by several magasine rated the best car of its time.
360 Hp and +290 kph was not bad back in 1990.
And up til 1997 NO BMW M car had any chance to follow its competitor at ALPINA.
After than they went away from Turbo cars and concentrated more to make the cars more exclusive and refined. Still fast with models like the B12 5,7 Coupe. B12 5,7 and 6.0, but not the raw edge like the B7, B10 Bi Turbo and B8 versions.
Today and for the last years all ALPINA cars are build at BMW`s production lines together with normal BMW`s.
BMW also use ALPINA`s engine in the X5 4.6. Normaly used in the B10 4,6 5- series.
The only thing happening at ALPINA is the development, building of the engines and mounting of special ALPINA parts. Engines are send to BMW where they are assembled. ALPINA is ONLY sold in Europe thrue BMW dealers.
So actually ALPINA is more a direct competitor to AMG than BMW M is.
AMG and ALPINA is about luxery, comfort and power offcourse, while BMW M is more of a sportive, raw and fast car.
Could say a lot more about ALPINA but I guess this is more than enough....

The Alpina B5 is a more direct competitor to the E55 than the M5 is. Personally, I like the 5-series. The B5 is a beast, but I'll still take my E55 over it anyday.

z4=looks like zorro sliced it up, horrible
3=probably the least offensive, not bad.
5=the kabuki look-a-like, awful
6=look in the mirror, pull down your bottom eye lids, does that look good?
7=decent big car, rear trunk less worse. glad the s is ditching those pie plate head lights.
audis=i think they all look good.
300c srt-8= the best all around car for the masses. dont mean to sound snobbish.

The B7 was recorded at 311 kph at Nardo highe speed oval this year, and the B5 for sure will be faster.
The question is, will it be faster than the M5.
Se this link to see how it did vs the AMG S55

Cant understand the TROLL remark, that was uncalled for.
I only posted it because this is a thread where the ALPINA is ( was) dicussed, and I belived that maybe it was some enthusiast that would be interessted even if this is a MB board.
BTW........
If I where in the states I would race you in anything on 4 wheels just for the hell of it......
