Sorry I didn't have time to follow the arguments about the M5 vs. "The competition" at an airfield last Sunday in Sweden, but I know there was some.
In any case, I'm the guy who rent the airfield and I wanted to give the BMW M5 some hard competition.
The runway was about 950 m (had to share the other half with airplanes)
I invited some friends and their cars:
Lamborghini Gallardo...
RUF CTR... (Yellowbird, except blue)
Porsche 996 Turbo Techart...
Porsche 997 Carrera S...
BMW M5 E60...
BMW M5 E39...
Dodge Viper SRT10...
MB E55 AMG
MB E55 T AMG...
MB C32 AMG
Audi RS4 Stage 2...
The RUF is in a league of its own! Clearly the fastest car of the day. The owner was kind enough to let me go a couple of times in his car, insane!

The E55 is silver, the M5 is "blue."

Why do they think the M5 was faster? What am I missing? Was this a digital hoax?

These pictures are by no mean conclusive of how the M5 and E55 did against each other. Did the E55 driver got a good jump start on the M5? Did the M5 closed in at higher speed or the distance increased steadily? Where is the full video of the whole race?

this is why rolling starts dont do justice to head to head comparos when we dont actually have someone from the e's point of view. or standing start. so iam really bored today and broke out the dial caliper. measuring the height and width in all 3 pic then measuring the ratios as they move down the track the conclusion is the same. for about an 800 meters or a half mile the cars start out, passed the cone i guess with about a 1/2 car lead. the mb seems to get a good low end lead, torque i guess, then the bmr pulls. or in a ratio of what appears to be the e winning at 100% the race starts with the bmw within 97.6% of the e, then 92.15, 94.05 and 96.4%. or in a theoretical 1/2 mile race dead even with the e pulling a lead and the bmr closing the gap back to where it started. wait a minute, what did i say???

So it's plain to see from these sets of shots & from the trailer on M5 board (against 997S, Gallardo, etc) that the M5 was giving the other cars the "hit". In other words he was letting the other car go 1st in order to run it down from behind. I also prefer "doggie-style" as there are normally no arguments from your opponent afterwards. Otherwise excuses tend to pop up. But if you run a guy down from behind then he has no excuse.
Now, it looks like the E55 got a good jump on the rolling run. Looks like 2 lengths ahead on the 2nd pic. And as we all know the E55 is not a slow car. So do you guys know wat it takes to run another fast car down from behind? But the M5 did pass the E55. Also, the gap tends to looks smaller when you are forced to fetch the other guy. Had the cars started side by side, it would have looked different.
And also, I don't see what difference a rolling run in 2nd gear vs a standing start would make. Unless one car has vastly more traction that the other once you redline 2nd gear & go into 3rd, the rest of the race would be the same as if you had gone from a stop, redlined 2nd gear & gone into 3rd.
Don't forget that with the M5's gearing it gets more torque to the ground than an E55 in 1st gear, has wider tyres, 100% LSD, clutch controlled by Launch control, lower mass, etc. So if anything in a standing start situation it might be the M5 that gets the jump & then the E55 will have to fetch. But hey, that's just my opinion, it might not be correct.
