Altenators?
Hi everyone, I have a question about altenators! I have a 1984 190e 2.3 and I have had to replace the altenator in it atleast 4 times. I have an 2,400 watt sound system in it and it just kills the altenator! I am interested in buying a higher amp output altenator but I really dont know anything about doing this! I have looked on some sites but I wanted everyones input and suggestions! Thanks guys! If you have any ideas on what kind of altenator I shoud go with Please let me know! THanks!

2400 watts sound system.Do you have a capacitor and do you have a 2 battery set up? If not you should look into it and you still will/may need a larger out put altenator. Check with a local stereo shop.

Dont waste your money on a capacitor or another battery. The only thing it will do is allow you to run your electronics longer, while the engine is turned off. A capacitor just stores power and gives it when its needed. It doesnt cure dimmed headlights or if you keep killing alternators.
The way to go is with a higher output alternator. You should go with a 143 or 150 amp alternator. Alot of the newer MB models have high output alternators and some will bolt on.

A 143 or 150 amp alternator from the bigger V-8 cars, mid to late 90's SL/S-Class, etc. should bolt up, but you will need to swap the pulley from the old alternator to the big boy.

MTI......Everything sounds great I just have a few questions. I am to the understanding that the 190e altenator puts out around 65 amps. I contacted an auto parts store this afternoon and asked them about a 1998 S-class 500 altenator....they told me it puts out 143 amps. My question is will all the extra amps hurt the car, Also you said that the only modification to the altenator would be to just exchange the pullies? This won't eventually burn out the altenator because of the smaller pully will it? haha the last question is just making sure that the only modification would be just exchanging the pullies.....your sure it will just bolt right on to the original montings for the Altenator? Thanks!

The alternator will bolt up, but it may need to be rotated slightly to get the wiring harness to face properly. The swap has been done by quite a few 190E owners that have stereo systems or want their headlights to shine a bit brighter.
