Climate Control- Blower Switch

Hello-
I am trying to replace the blower switch on my 88 190e 2.3. Is it absolutely necessary that I take the whole dash/instrument panel/steering wheel/ glove box out in order to do this?

Thanks,

That's what I was hoping. I cant seem to figure out how to get in there. Do you mind explaining it? When I look at books such as chilton, they only explain how to take the dash out and it doesnt show how to do the console.

There are screws that fasten the top, located under the two center dash vents. Then there are fasteners in the footwell on either side. Finally, on the later models, you have to remove the ashtry and on the inside of the hole, you'll see the screws that connect the center console to the shifter console. After that, only the wiring to the devices hold the console in place.

Thanks! so I take the two center dash vents off (with an alan wrench) and I will be able to see the two screws? and the fasteners should just pull off right? I dont think I saw anything visible on the footwalls.

Remove the two center vents, you pull these out gently with needle-nose pliers and cloth (so you don't scratch or break them). Then you'll notice two screws, remove these. Now remove the ashtray and you'll notice two more screws, remove these. Done. Now, like MTI stated, all that is holding back the console is the wiring for the headunit/climate control, and fan). You do not need to touch the center alan screw.

How did this go? I am asking because I believe my climate control unit is out and I would like to pull it and replace this (if needed). Does anyone out there know how I can verify if the unit is good or if there is some other probelm. I have issues with the change from hot to cold. Everything else seem to work fine.

The panel works but If I move the *** to the right between cold and hot, nothing happens. The blower comes on each switch seems to work what is their specific function, yet I cannot control hot or cold.
