2000 made during the 2 year run (86 and 87). 1000 manual and 1000 autos. Came in smoke silver (sorta champagne looking) and charcoal.

I am about to buy a 1990 2.3-16V, but everywhere I searched states that the 90-91 should be Evolution I or II, and 2.3-16V is only between the 86-87 year, I am alittle confused?
Also how much HP is the U.S version 2.3-16V 5 speed?
Thanks.
Wayne

There were 2000 US spec models made and imported. The US 2.3-16v was only 1986 and 1987 and had 168hp. Post the VIN and we could tell you what it actually is.

For accuracy sake:
MBUSA says that they sold a total of 2,229 2.3-16 in the US during the years 1986 and 1987, the only years that it was sold in North America. The car was available from 1984 through the middle of 1988 in the rest of the world. It was subsequently replaced in mid-88 by the 2.5-16, which was not sold by MBUSA. In addition to the 2.3-16 that were sold through MBUSA, there are many "gray market" versions which were imported by either owners or dealers and then "federalized" to meet US standards.
There are a few "gray market" 2.5-16 in the US. Apparently there's also one of the 502 Evolution II in Colorado. It was featured in a recent Mercedes Owner's Club of America "Star Magazine."
