1st gear

190E 2.6 Automatic

Is there anyway to get my car to start in first gear, all the time? Even when I put it in "2" Its still very slow off the line untill about 2,000 RPM then it seems to pick up very well.

I seem to beleive that my car already starts in first gear because i dont actually feel it shift back down at the 2,000rpm, and when im just driving regualr, it goes through all 4 gears.

A buddy of mine has a 1995 Izusu pickup 4cyl. This truck has 100hp. He smoked me off the line. I passed him at 50. and he didnt have a chance after. but off the line it was the most pethetic thing. I mine as well have got out the car and ran on foot. lol

Is there any "fix" to this off the line lack of movment?

Ive never heard of going from 2 back to drive. Ill go try that right now.

Isnt there anyway to keep it in first. If it has something telling it to start in 2nd, isnt there something i can remove/replace to tell it to go to frist?

I'm sure there is some way, because if I am not mistaken a few 500e owners tried doing the same thing, so I would think it would be a similar process.

Sounds like a fun major change in the programming of the computer just because you dont want to move the stick down then back into D. Kind of costly eh? Maybe more cost effective for you to swap a Getrag transmission in eh?

A trick is to install a toggle switch to connect the kickdown wires when the switch is on and then the car will start in 1st. Only issue here is that after you let off the gas it may delay the rest of the shifts a bit since the kickdown solenoid would be engaged as long as the toggle was in ON mode. If you want a definite 1st gear start then go to 2 and leave it there until you get to second gear and then go to D. Or shift to 2 then back to D while stopped and then floor it off the line to engage kickdown so first will hold to redline, if you do not engage the kickdown then you will shift at about 4000RPM to 2nd.

If I leave it in "D" then i drop the hammer, but not far enough for "kickdown" It shifts out of first at 5800rpm. If I leave it ALL the way down it shifts at 6700rpm.

I think my car does start in first, its just incredible slow off the line. Ill have to take a video of it and upload it to see if everyone else does the same thing.

I wasnt aware these cars had an ECU to change the transmission control.

You have one that starts in 1st. Pre-1992 started in 2nd. Yes first is short due to regulations in Europe. As for the ECU for Transmission control, no they doi not have that. The CIS-E Brain only controls the electronic portion of the fuel injection system.

Thank you very much. I was pretty sure it was stsrting in first...

These cars have got to be one of the slowest cars off the line. I couldnt imagine if it actually started in second. Thats like a death trap trying to pull out in traffic.
