Question Upgrade '87 16V

Posted: Sun May 13, 2007 4:20 pm Post subject: Restore/update 16V

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hi;
I'm a new member from Vancouver Canada.
I have an '87 MB 16V I want to bring up to snuff appearance and performance-wise.

It sounds like some of you MB guys out here are pretty experienced with upgrades and mods. I'm hoping you can give me some advice and sources for parts.

The car is a 5-spd, high kms and completely stock.
I'm having the timing chain done right now, but it runs great with no problems.

Does anyone know a local source for new or good used euro headlights? I am planning to go to HID (bi-xenon?) at some point, too.

My crappy P6000 Pirellis on 15" rims combination are screaming to be replaced. I'm thinking of 17" rims, but I am not sure of tire size.
215/40/17 have been suggested to keep the speedo true.

Any ideas on where I can get a good deal and selection for MB compatible rim/tire pkg. ?

Lastly, has anyone any experience upgrading 190 brakes with the big discs from 400E? If I can get used calipers, I understand you can just bolt them right on.
Does this sound right? Does anyone have used 400E's?

I think Brembo has a package for my car. Any idea how big the rotors are?

I imagine you guys are hooked up with most suppliers in town.
If you could point me in the right direction, it would be much appreciated. I'm interested in any suggestions too.

Thanks,

Sean

215/40/17 have been suggested to keep the speedo true. Speedo calibration is easily done. 215/45/17 would be a safer choice to keep your rims safe if you do not get a high quality rim. Just for the extra sidewall height. With stock suspension that sohudl give you no problems

Any ideas on where I can get a good deal and selection for MB compatible rim/tire pkg. ? Packages? no such deal really, Keep an eye on on MB forums for some nice deals, A guy on Benzworld is selling some borbet's right now with tires. But he has a guy commign to take a look at them tomorrow. Ground shipping to canada may cost around 150-200 USD

Does this sound right? Does anyone have used 400E's? Calipers and rotors will need to be changed and for safty the lines should be replaced with braided stainless steel lines, the ABS pump should be replaced with one form a 400 to handle the power as well as the brake MC. Here is my setup on 400E's

Enjoy.

Nice Benz!

Your car looks great! Now I'm really inspired to go ahead with this.

Huge amount of info too. Exactly the stuff I'm wondering.
However, from what I've seen, I don't think I can afford NEW ABS pump or M/C for 400.
Is there a good supplier of used stuff?
Does the Brembo setup require these upgrades, too?

Thanks

Welcome to the 190 world. Fortunately, I have most of the stuff you are looking for:

I have a set of good condition E420 front and rear brake calipers and brake pads off a 94 W124 E420. The brake pads were used and attached onto the calipers as I bought them. There are plenty of life left on the pads. Paid $550 6 months ago and sell for $475 + actual shipping.

I also have a set of four 17 x 7.5 ET37 EVO rims in Titanium finishes along with four brand new Barum Bravuris 215/40/17 tires. The rims are in mint condition with some minor curb mark. These are original Mercedes factory rims (not replica) and the Mercedes Titanium center caps are included. Selling for $1,450 plus shipping.

PM me or email me at sjevo@sbcglobal.net if you are interested. I'm in San Jose, CA and local pickup is welcome.
