It's a heater vent.

MTI your blowing hot air..j/k
i dont think thats a heater vent there is no ducting or anything behind it but wires and srs controls. i think some 190s may have had speakers there? they look more like speaker grills than heater vents
i replaced my dash and center console and there was no heater ducting going to this. there is another one on the drivers side also but it is covered up by the lower knee panel

There's no ducting because of the location . . . the grill is located directly below the heater core.

There is a vacuum valve on the lower portion of the heater core shroud that operates a flap that sends heated air to the floor when you select and of the buttons with the down arrow on the US climate control unit. I'm not sure if the non-US (rotary switches) have the same ability.

In this picture of a dash removed you can see the pink top of the vacuum valve in the lower part of the heater console/shroud. Just to the right of the valve you can see the "duct" for that mesh vent.

Ill have to turn it on and see what happens. I could have sworn it was the air circulation intake. Definitly not enough room for a speaker there. The magnet would be too close to the radio. I think.

That is a very random place for a heating anything. When I press the down only button. the air still come from the side/middle vents. I have to close the middle vents to get air to my feet. I wear sandals everyday being in florida, and on the chilly nights I like heat on my feet.
