Have a 1990 190D 2.5 Turbo. Confused on what to do next

Ok.
I have a 1990 190D 2.5 Turbo that I shipped over here to the US from Japan. The regulations there are stupid so I could no longer drive it there. I've had it here for almost a year, and its been doing nothing but collecting dust. Iv'e been thinking about registering the car here, so I can drive it but have no clue on how to. If I can't do that, I plan to sell it. Does anyone know how much the car is worth? The condition is almost perfect except there is a small dent on the side from the container when I shipped it here. The car has about 70k miles on it.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,
-Ken

You could get lucky at your local DMV, but more than likely, the VIN will cause a red flag to show up that the car is not a Federalized, DOT, NHTSA approved chassis. They will likely tell you that you will not be allowed to register the car without it being certified as being converted to US safety standards. There have been instances of DMV clerks not noticing the non conforming VIN and doing the registration without issue, but that's really luck.

Apparently Canadian registration of non-North American cars is a bit more flexible. You might consider marketing the car up in the "Great White North."

For various "cult" reasons, the 2.5 turbo does attract more attention than run of the mill W201. First, not many of them are in the US/Canada, second they have that distinctive slotted fender and finally, diesels are finally getting the respect of motorheads as being a strong, long lasting powerplant.

Pricing is going to depend on the car itself, the desirability of the options and condition. Check Hemmings Motor News, or other online sales listings, like cars.com or the like.

where are you located? price may not just depend on condition. if the car can't be registered the only alternative would be finding a junk car and using its vin# .. could get complicated. i know of some car (toyota soarer) out on the market for a long time coz of registration problems.. eventually got sold but to this day, its not street legal.

I'm located in LA, Cali. I'm thinking about maybe selling the car in Canada. I found a car just like mine (shipped from japan) that was sold there for about $8,800

Or if someones willing to make an offer, hit me up. I just don't want the car to sit around collecting dust. It needs to be doing what it was made to do
