err, no. The "Baby Hammer" was the AMG 3.2L six. I believe that this car is a custom installation, not really an AMG project in the sense that AMG in Germany had any engineering input on fitting the V-8 in a W201 chassis. It could have been done by one of the licensed AMG shops in the US or Canada.

Baby Hammer = M117 SOHC 6.0 w201.
Built in germany...this car was in the catalogues, etc. I believe that you are incorrect, but regarless cool car.

Autoweek in 1988 Used the Baby Monkier
I believe if you check the 1989 issue of Road & Track that reviewed the 3.2L AMG, you'll also find the reference to "Baby Hammer" in the article title.
I really doubt that AMG would have installed the 16 valve's center console in one of their tuned cars.

Well, since I have most of the AMG catalogs from the period, mostly in German, there is no reference to a 6.0L W201 in any that I have. I'd love to see a pic of one.

So Ive seen the red 190E 6.0 refered to as baby hammer. Baby refering to baby benz (190E), and hammer refering to 6.0.
Magazines can call things whatever they want. I think we could debate it all day what is a baby hammer, but I think we have both seen it called baby hammer with 6.0 or 3.2, 3.4.
BTW, I have a 300E AMG Hammer 6.0 Dohc, and I have a lot of magazines and amg brochures both in english and german from the period. Probably about 200 kg of reading material including magazines from germany, AMS,etc.
regards, Austin

Anytime you'd like to post a picture of an AMG brochure/catalog/pricelist that denotes the 6.0L W201, I'd be very interested in seeing it.
BTW, does it really matter what car you have?

Of course this car came up FS right AFTER I have blown nearly 9k on my 5.6L swap.....HAHAHAHHA.....MY LIFE IS AWESOME
That first pic is actually very interesting however...it appears that they used the stock euro (or maybe R107) headers for the driver side.....hmmm
Also, I don't know about the 400+ Hp claim. The 6.0 quad cam Hammers and SEL/SEC's were just barely cracking 400 if I remember correctly

Maybe MTI has a scanned DYNO chart for the 6.0 SOHC
Flynavy, such as life. How is the subframe going?

I actually checked this car out in person the other day. To say the least, the guy selling it was very rude and treated me like garbage. Honest to god the opening dialogue was this, verbatim:
"Can someone show me around the AMG out there?"
"No."
"Why's that?"
"$8500 firm, no questions. It has a blow head gasket which I wont repair (he owns an auto shop), and you dont even know that that car is."
I cant recall a time where I have been treated worse.
Regardless, how much do you reckon it would cost to fix this thing up?

What an a$$! But you know what, it is not the car's fault, so you would be right to pursue it it you want it. I wonder not how much it would wonder so much about the cost to get it to be right, but what would it be worth if it was right. Worth the difference in repairs, parts and time?
PS. I had to do the edit because after re-reading, I realized what I had posted didn't make much sense. Then again, sometimes I think I never do

My guess is that if it were REALLY in good condition (like most of the vintage AMG's you see for sale over in Japan), it could pull 15-10k in the states. Hell, I would have bought it for that much if it were nice. Still, the car has a lot of potential for someone who wants a project. The guy simply needs to wake up, smell the coffee, and half his asking price. Pretty sure he could roll it off the lot for 4-5 grand.....though it seems like he would probably be butthurt about it. People need to learn that (even special) cars lose value when you neglect them for 10 yrs.

I'm very interested in this car, but it only depends on one thing: was the engine installed by and AMG dealer or by some doofus with a wrench.

Its hard saying since I believe this exact example is the only 6.0 w201 AMG I've ever seen pics of (previously). Whomever did it kept things pretty standard looking, so MAYBE (?). Not a whole lot of SOHC 6.0 AMG motors just sitting around, even back then, so I would think the odds are higher than you might think

I had an Fastlane or Performance Car magazine which had a test between the Brabus 190 V8 and the AMG 190 V8. I sold the copy last year but I do remember reading about this car. I think it is the real deal, it looks like it could be a great car if someone gave it a little love.

is a German Tank
Let us not speculate, let's give it the benefit of the doubt. EVERTHING about the car looks period correct, everything from the Hammer wheels to the WHERES-THE-PUKEY-SMILEY paint/keyed red.
