As for the 2.3-16 specifically, the biggest problems arise not from the build of the car, but the neglect inflicted by previous owners due to the high cost of maintaining the car. For instance, valve clearances are manually done via shims under the cam buckets.
Pretty much everything done is "homespun" in the way of turbos, superchargers and the like. The biggest "bang for the buck" is to substitute the Bosch CIS for a full EFI system that can be tuned. Checkout eBay for a guy in Asia selling EFI conversion kits based on Megasquirt.
