Thinking of a 190
All
I am thinking of getting a 190, 300 E or D (early 80's for the diesel, late 80's or early 90's for the E). As for the 190 what are some of the trouble spots to look for? Decent gas mileage is a plus for me so would the 4 cylinder be better or is it a wash with 6 cylinder engine? Is premium fuel a must in these cars? Assuming decent care for the car how many miles is typical for the engine and transmission last. Have seen some advertised locally with 180k on them which seems high for a gasoline engine. I will be working on it myself since I am capable of doing it. hopefully they don't require a bunch of special factory tools. Any other tips or info is appreciated! I am in Eastern Washington state.

The 190E is a SOLID SOLID car my friend. I would find one and get a nice pre purchase inspection. Find one with under 120k. They are out there if you are willing to travel.

Opt for the early 90s (W124) E-Class. If you're riding around in a truck at present, chances are you'll appreciate the added space that the midsize 300E has over the Baby Benz (190).
That said, either way you choose both represent a solid, lasting era of build quality for Mercedes.

91 is a must, these engines are pushing 1 HP per cubic inch so if you put in 87 you will get preignition which can destroy the engine.
190s are strong cars, mine has over 203K miles.
Gas mileage not the best, but I drive it hard.
If you are going to use it in the winter you can get W124 with 4 wheel drive, 4Matic
