frostbite

I have a 92' E190 and I was driving down the road and all of a sudden it started making a clicking noise and everytime it clicked it made the tachometer drop down and come back up. Also the cruise control stopped working at the same time. I turned the A/C off and everything started working again. Then I kept going and the car lost power for a second so I let off the gas then pushed the gas again and the car took off just fine. I stopped for a second and then the car died and wouldn't start again. Does anyone have any ideas on what this might be.
