Thunk...thunk...thunk...right rear noise..
Hi MB world posters...
In the past few days my 1991 2.3 E has been making a thunking noise from the right rear side of the car. It only happens at slow speeds in drive and reverse...and only when its cold.
BTW I checked my transmission fluid and its below the min line....I will fill it up tomorrow but was curious what this noise might be.
It sounds like metal hitting plastic (I thought I had bailing wire stuck in the wheel!)....

Whoo hoo! I found it...flex plate bolt sheared
After having my wife and daughter listen as well as feeling for where the noise was coming from I pinpointed it to the rear center of the car ahead of the differential.
There is a flex plate that connects the drive shaft with the rear differential held on by around 5 17mm bolts. In feeling around that flex plate I noticed that one of the bolts had sheared off. The bolt is still in there but is just jingling around being held on by a small strip of metal at the end of the bolt.
So off to the dealer to get a replacement....
