190E intermittantly stalls when going into R or D
My girlfriend has a 1992 190E 2.3 with 160,000 kilometers on it. On cold days around 5-10 degrees celcius she will go out and start the car and it will idle fine in Park or Neutral. But as soon as she moves the lever into R or D the engine sometimes will drop idle so low the engine cannot compensate for the idle drop and will stall. Other times it goes into gear and idles without a problem. It seems to only happen after the engine is dead cold say sitting over night. Some other fourms were saying something about a vacuum valve in the passenger fender well that adjusts vacuum to the engine?? Never heard of this before.
Unfortunatly I am more familiar with W126's and W203's and my knowledge on W201's is rather poor.
My son's 93 2.3 had very poor cold drive offs and sometimes would stall.
I did a well over due tune up and symptoms disappeared. Just changed Rotor, Cap and Plugs, no adjustments needed just plug and play ( if you get the pre-gapped plugs, I chose the NGKs). Cleaned Air Fliter, changed the oil/filter and also placed some Techron additive.
I think the new plugs, cap and rotor had the most benefit. I placed Techron a week earlier and it still stalled at in the morning.
Now it drives off with out hesitation. In fact pulls very nicely.
For extra measure, I will be swapping the Fuel Filter, Damn expensive even for an after market FRAM filter, looked just like my 911 filter.
Will also do trans, diff fluid change shortly.
