Help! My 1985 190e stoped on me while driving to work the other day This is what happened. I was driving along when I noticed the cluster lights on the dash started blinking on and off for a few seconds than the motor died so I pulled over to the side of the road than tried to restart the engine but all it did was wind over and over so left it on the side of the road went back after work tried it again this time nothing happened it was like I had a dead flat battery got it towed home next day same thing nothing ANYONE GOT ANY IDEAS. Have you tested the battery?

This is a follow up on other things I've tried Road side assist checked battery holding 12.5 volts so battery is good. The ignition is hard to turn on I have to wiggle the key a few times to start it does anyone think that maybe the ignition might have something to do with my problem. Oh and also I replaced the surge protection relay thinking this was the problem to but still no good.

It does sound like an electrical short, perhaps in the loom, since the cluster lights all went ape before the motor died.
I would've guessed surge protection relay or something similar myself too. Next on the list would be hunting down any cracked/stripped wire insulation. At the age of these cars the wiring insulation gets real brittle and simply cracks off in some places.

If the ignition key is getting sticky that's something else very important: get the ignition barrel swapped out before it siezes. Once the barrel siezes they're extremely difficult to change out, you need to change the ignition barrel as soon as it starts getting sticky before it siezes, it can only be easily changed out when you can turn it to accessories.
That shouldn't cause the problem you described however, it's just another problem.

My key got sticky only for a few weeks before it siezed. The whole dash had to come out, bits had to be cut, it took over a week, and there was some damage done just to change the lock if you can't turn the key. Change it before it siezes.
