Wheels / Tires for a '93 2.6
I posted this on the wheel / tire forum and had no luck (no responses), so here it goes again:
----------------------------------------
I recently bought my car, a 1993 MBZ 190e-2.6 with 48K miles!!!! it is absolutely stunning! there are only a couple of thing needing attention:
1. The wheels are the stock 7-hole, 15 inch ones with tires sized 195/65-15. The wheels have absolutely no curb rash, but I'm actually thinking of something in a 16-inch size. Also, if I decide on keeping the existing rims, how wide and what profile tire would give a little more tire patch on the road and a little less sidewall?
2. Body lean / roll. I know it's just perception, but it leans quite a bit in the corners, thus the lower profile idea. Would a stiffer shock buy me anything? I don't want the lower, stiffer, 17-inch wheel setup, because I've driven in a similar car with it and I jarred a few fillings loose.
I had a VW GTI, and although the Benz will not get off the line like the GTI, it can sure cruise at high speed a heck of lot better...it truly feels like a tank; a very tight, CLASSY, safe tank.
Anyway, please e-mail me with any helpful suggestions.

If you're looking to improve cornering, then I would suggest looking at 1) stiffer anti-roll bars; 2) lowering; 3) improve braking performace.
The W201 can take W124 roll bars with some cutting at the ends since they are longer than the W201. Lowering the car via shorter sport springs and with the proper sport shocks. The lower center of gravity (CG) will help cornering. Improving braking means coming into the corner faster and exiting faster. With larger rims, the W201 can be fitted with the 4 piston calipers from the W124 400E as a bolt on upgrade. Combined with a wider tire, like a 7.25 or 7.5", braking capacity goes way up. A lot of people don't realize that tires play a big part in braking. If you don't want to upgrade calipers, consider upgrades to Porterfield RS4 Street pads and some stainless steel brake lines.

biggest bang for your buck is wheels. Go to 16's, cheaper and lighter with a 225/45/16 tire.
