190e 5 speed
I recently purchased an '89 190e 2.6L 5 speed and it has some grinding shifting from first into second. If I double clutch it and shift at a slow speed it shifts like butter but anything outside of that sweet spot doesn't sound too good. It's been suggested that it could be the clutch brake or the synchro need replaced. (When people say clutch brake are they referring to the pressure/friction plate?) Any suggestions on what the problem could be?

A "grind" of "buzz" as you describe going from first to second is probably a worn synchro. Double clutching or slowly shifting from first to second will usually keep it from grinding as much...Typically, the faster you upshift from first to second, the problem will seem worse.

Thank you. Is that something that can be repaired without doing a complete rebuild on the tranny. A local transmission shop said I needed new everything and quoted about $2000. I prefer to do the work myself but this car is a lot different than what I'm used to (2nd gen Chevy pickups) so I'm new to the German engineering.

I've had the problem on a past car...pretty common problem on higher mile manual trannys, but it was never bad enough that I felt the need to have it fixed. Slower shifting generally helps to live with it, but to repair it will require pulling the trans and taking it all apart. Not sure of the actual cost to do this, but it is a big job and will not be cheap. Given the need to R+R and disassemble everything anyway probably justifies the cost for a full rebuild...

Have you changed the transmission fluid? It may be old and dirty.
Also how are the bushings in the shifter? If the shifter is sloppy, then it may not be putting the transmission precisely and cleanly into gear, so then you can get a grind, etc.
Simple stuff first.
