alternator problem

Newbie here, i own an 87 190e manual which was running smoothly until yesterday, i noticed that the voltage meter from my dash started to fall from 12v to eventually 9 v and almost all the warning lights turned on making the engine choke until it eventually stopped when going uphill. Anyone who experienced this? When I changed the battery everthing got ok again. Tomorrow i will be having the alternator checked. Thanks.

The brushes on the voltage regulator must be worn out by now, preventing current from reaching the battery. Ask to get the voltage regulator removed from the alternator housing and inspect it yourself. You may replace the whole voltage regulator or just the brushes. I would definitely try these first, before investing in a whole alternator.

Here's a random image to serve you as a reference to the original fully-extended length of the brushes:

Thanks a lot for the reply. Had to change the whole alternator because what they put was not the original one.
