You're getting "blow-by" from the valve cover breather. In order to equalize pressure, there's a tube that runs from the valve cover to the underside of the air cleaner housing. Excess pressure under the valve cover will force oil into the air cleaner element.

First, if the oil is black, it's time to change filters and oil. Black is a sign of too much carbon that the oil filter is not catching.

Second, probably time to check the breather which is attached to the underside of the valve cover to make sure it's not blocked up.

Third, might want to do a compression check to see if there's valve or piston leakage that is causing excessive air pressure under the valve cover.

Breather Changeout

How much work is it to change out a breather? Can it be done without pulling the valve cover?

The breather is located on the underside of the valve cover, so it has to come off. It may just need cleaning if it's not damaged. On the 2.3L there are was a change in design so it might be best to check the engine number stamped on the block to make sure you get the right one if you're replacing it.
