speed limiter?

ive been told my car was imported from germany when new. i took it on the freeway the other day and could only get the to 85. i have a 1984 190e 2.3l automatic tranny. it actually stopped accelerating around 80 but i went down a little over pass and i got up to 85. whats with this? is there a speed limiter?

What RPM were you running at 85 mph? The W201's have rpm limiters to prevent over-revving the engines, with the Euro-spec cars having higher rev limits. The limiter is built into the fuel pump relay.

Why would you want to over-rev an engine?

Getting a euro-spec fuel pump relay would get you the higher rev limit, but beyond that, you're risking serious valve and piston damage when you have a valve hitting a piston because of valvetrain float. Stiffer valve springs might get you into a higher rpm limit, but since the M102 (except the pre-85 that have shimmed buckets) uses self adjusting hydraulic tappets, it's not going to help much.

I think the original poster has an engine/exhaust problem rather than a limiter problem.

hmm...i wasnt revving it too high. it can easily rev to 4500-5000 but i was around 2500 or 3000 i think. ill take it back on the freeway one day just to see. what could be causing it to cut off at that speed?

you can probably go faster if you rev it up to 4500-5000 rpm you could probably cruise for three hours at 5000rpm

Funny but my 1986 does not have a rev limiter on its fuel pump relay! I wonder if it was replaced at some time with one that did not have this! It says Kickdown on it and all and I know there is no limiter because it went up past redline one day accidentally while I was rev'ing cause I was working on it and not paying attention!

Mine has hit over 100 but I do not attempt that too often! It supposedly will do like 110! I have a weird issue that it accelerates just fine to 100 but when going up a slight grade and flooring it at about 75 it only slowly approaches 80 and when I say slowly I mean slowly. Has no problem holding speed just a dead spot there around 80 when going up a hill! Now on a flat it has no issue with going past 80 and does very well! Not that I do this often but it does bother me somewhat as I feel it should still pull a little bit! Not expecting acceleration like my C230K but something would be nice for those times when I want to get past somebody and get back in the right lane! Hopefully someone else can chime in and let me know this is normal or not so I can either investigate more or just let it go as a normal thing and the engine just does not have the power to accelerate in 4th gear at that speed! Other than that this car actually accelerates very good for 120 hp and no EFI! Just funny that the 100 hp Saturn we just got rid of accelerated better on the highway at higher speed than the 190 does! Of course I still keep thinkin new injectors would fix this!!!!!

the saturn probably weighs alot less than the mercedes does... did the saturn have a 5 speed? it probably revved higher too... well ive decided to quit driving the car. the motor mounts went out and we are above what we said we would spend on the car so its out of here soon...

Saturn weighed in a little less and was a 4 speed auto! But the gearing was a lot diferent and the engine rev's were lower at speed! Plus EFI does help somewhat in getting a better fuel pulse than the CIS-E does as well!

I've got a december of 1985 mercedes 190E with the 2.3 ltr four cylinder and I have no problems geting it to top out the spedometer. as far as I can see everything on my car is stock. It doesn't seem to have any limiter at all.

I had a 190D that said it should go to 107 or so. I have gotten it to 105 although it took a long time to get up there (93hp go figured).

Hey dinnut,

the 190E 2.3 has a top speed of 197 km/h, that are 122 mph, with 132hp and 136hp starting from 1990. These are the values of the German 190E 2.3.
