Question 1991 190E 2.3 Air Conditioner common failure mode?

1991 190E 2.3 Air Conditioner common failure mode?

Morning board,

I'm on an extended trip and my daughters 190e Air Conditioner is acting up.

it intermittantly does not cool. When it cools it cools great. There doesn't seem to be any pattern to it.

I'm told there is a module which commonly goes bad? Is this the dash unit, or some other module?

TIA

Robert

You might be referring to the Klima control unit in the engine compartment. In short it disengages the compressor if it labors. It compares the compressor speed to the engine speed, and a certain deviation will result in compressor lock-out until the next time the ignition key is cycled (off-on).

Behind the clove box and to the right side is a module that controls the A/C switches. It is both vaccume and electric. You can hear it clicking sometimes as it operates. Problem is when it goes bad it operates on its oun, like a short switching back and forth on its oun. Thus on then off sometimes worse that others. Its a little hard to get to but not to costly as I remember. Onlt two screws hold it in but it has several air hoses that you need to transfer to the new one & two Elect. conections. Good luck I Hope this helps.
