Steering Slop.. but only on one side??
So I have a 1988 190D OM 602 with a 5-speed, I have spent a year with it on jack stands doing things like all the new bushings replace with polyurethane, shocks, and struts, new tires(and balanced), fresh alignment, new interior, etc. With these upgrades and revamping, I replaced my steering box.
Some of the upgrades were parts from a 16v, this included the short ratio steering box. When I first installed it, it leaked, so I ordered a new seal and O-ring kit. Rebuilt my steering box all the way down to having the ball bearings in my hands, and a couple of tries and some very helpful youtube videos later, everything was back together and not leaking.....
BUT once I wrapped everything else up and started driving it, I found some disappointing slop in the steering.. but the odd part is that it is only to one side (toward the right). It is about 2 inches of play before anything happens. But if (starting at center) I turn left there is no play and feels direct and awake. Any ideas on what to fix? Or what went wrong in the steering box rebuild?
