92 190e 2.3 what to look for ??
I am looking at a 92 2.3.
I have not driven the car yet.
It is on a small used car lot asking $4500.
they are installing a new alternator as soon as they get a chance.
the overall outward apperance is great.
no dents , dings , scratches.
interior looks great to and sunroof
130K miles.
the car is a light beige color with tan interior( leather I think ).
what should I look for when going over the car and test driving??
what would be a good offering price?
they have had the car on the lot a long time ( not the best looking color)
trying to do a bit of research before I buy.
thank for any help.
Pete

They can ask for that till the cows come home, you'd be advised not to pay that much for a 2.3, maybe for a really fresh 2.6L.

How nice of them, since it's pain to DIY.

Check for rust at the jack holes in the lower skirt; pull out the trunk carpet and look at the wells behind the rear wheels and spare well; get under the car and look for rust at the front corners under the headlights; check for signs of rust at the inside/bottom of the doors.
130K miles.
A tad high for a '92, but not overly. I would still insist on a compression test of all four cylinders and have the chain tensioner inspected.

MB-Tex (vinyl) will fool most buyers into thinking it's leather. In many ways, MB-Tex is better than leather.

It should cold start immediately without cough or smoke. Listen at startup for any metallic rattling, like a chain hitting a timing cover that disappears after the oil pressure builds up; check the coolant and be concerned if it is the bright green cheapo stuff and/or if it looks like a mocha latte; check if the aux radiator fan cycles on and off during idle with the hood up; a/c should be frosty and hopefully coverted to R134a by now; suspension noises, like creaks or groans=$; the suspension rubber parts should be examined for cracking, checking or other wear; struts and shock checked for leaking or being worn out.
what would be a good offering price?
Maybe half of what they're asking.

OK
I have taken the car for a test drive.
rides good stops great.
no noise at all from the suspension, a bit soft though.
the engine runs well and pulls good through the rpm range.
shifts well, a bit early unless your foot is on the floor.
all in all a really nice ride.
the fuel, oil and water gauge cluster does not work.
I found 1 blown fuse(#9) and what appeared to be 1 missing fuse?
the a/c did not get cold at all.
the battery , altinator and 1 rear window reglator are new.
the fuses will be checked and replaced and the car will be Maryland state inspected.
$3000.
I will have to pay MD tax, title, and tag fees as the car is in PA.
should be around $300 total.
Still the best price I can find with the condition the car is in.
Interior prefect , exterior straight with a few scraps and scratches.
But I want to paint it anyway ,the color is not my favorite.
Hope to get the car monday or tuesday.
