I also can only remove the key on my 1991 when the shifter is in park. I wonder if there might be a difference between U.S. and Canadian market cars?

89 190E 2.6 Blue, 89 190E 2.6, teal green, 99 SL500 Sport

1991 was the first year of the ignition lock that prevents key from being removed.
Having driven 89, 90, 91, 92 and 93 W201s I've observed that's when the change occurred.
