What's it take for a AfterMarket Radio Install??

Heres the deal...this girl who lives an hour away owns a 1984 190d. With the stock radio...trying to score some points here, so I am installing a CD player that I have. So I want to be sure I have everything I need. I have never seen it before. Is it the standard radio size? or do I need a trim plate. Is there a special tool for pulling the stock radio? And my last question is, does someone make a wiring harness for it? Thanks....John in Oakland CA

The OEM radio, usually a Becker Grand Prix, is a single DIN sized unit, and since it has no "knobs" it doesn't have a faceplate with knob holes. It's best to stay with a similar unit, otherwise you're going to have to get a plate adapter. If you don't want to cut and splice wires, then there is a harness adapter available, from www.crutchfield.com

Be forwarned that the speakers all go throught the console mounted fader dial. Here is the color codes for the wire:

Memory (+12v Constant) Red
Ignition (+12v Switched) Black/Yellow
Ground (-) Brown
Illumination Gray/Blue
Dimmer (none)
Power Antenna Blue
S p e a k e r s
Right Front (+) Black/Green
Right Front (-) Black
Left Front (+) Black/Red
Left Front (-) Black
Right Rear (+) Black/Green
Right Rear (-) Black
Left Rear (+) Black/Red
Left Rear (-) Black

Remove the fold down ashtray, then you should see the clips that hold the deck in.

easiest I have found is to remove the console all together to do the work and to wire the speakers direct. I believe that model has 4" speakers all around. To remove the console is easy - there are two screws on either side low down below the "vent" and two inside the middle vents on the dash. To gain access to the screws on the dash use a softened pair of pliers (thick cloth between the gripping surface) and gently pull out each defuser. Becareful not to lose the two support springs. You now have access to the two upper screws. You can now remove the console and start unplugging everything. Would be a good time to renew the wheat bulbs in the heater controls and the ash tray.

Found the following link in an earlier post: http://www.2phast.com/190E/interior.htm.
Nice pictures to go with the above descriptions.
