The proper way...
Pop open the cupholder. Reach into the driver's side cupholder and pull out that rubber mat (there's a flat tab that sticks out). Then grab the extended cupholder, lift up the base, and rotate clockwise (if you were looking straight down).
Anyone else have the problem of the silver "OPEN" button cracking? Happened 2x aleady here.

Sorry to bring this question back again, but I simply cannot get my cupholder out by twisting it. I have removed the rubber mat on the drivers side at the bottom (the one with the indentation and the tab at the back) and have tried twisting clockwise to remove. It flexes...so much that one more ounce of pressure feels like it's going to make it explode into a mess of broken plastic.
What am I missing?

Right. So when you pull out the rubber bit there's another tab on the cupholder proper. Pull up on that until the cupholder pops out, then rotate out.

Fine. Don't say I never did nothin' for nobody
The part they refer to as the "shelf" would be your old cupholder,
snaps out from the back to the front, once you pry out the rubber part on the bottom.
And BTW, turned out my old cupholder had nothing wrong with it, once I got it cleaned up. It was just sticky from drinks getting spilled etc.
I soaked it in some soapy water, and let it dry, and it's good as new.
So if anyone needs a cupholder, I could let one go cheap.
I paid 60 bucks for a new on I think.
PN is B66920115 (pre 2005)
I'll let it go, oh, say 30 bucks + shipping.
