That is what I thought, but I'm sure you can still drain it. The fluid is just supposed to last a lifetime.

Is supposed to, but I would not trust it, and my MB tech confirmed it, If you plan to keep the car for any lenth of time, after the warranty, change it.

The plugs are supposed to last 100k I changed mine at 40K.

i drive my baby the way she's supposed to be driven and know it's time i changed the tranny fluid and filter.

anyways, here's the scoop (since the book is WRONG). 3.7 litres NOT 5 or just to the bottom of the 80 mark on the universal dipstick.

MB’s #140 15 21 fluid level measuring tool for their 722.6xx transmission is unlike a conventional dipstick in that it bottoms against the inside of the pan, and is then to be read up from there.

Its markings at 25 degrees Celsius ATF temperature range between 10.3mm to 21.3mm.

Its markings at 80 degrees Celsius ATF temperature range between 54mm to 65mm.

ok...mb's claim that these cars don't need a tranny fluid change is garbage. i cannot even begin to tell you how much better my car behaves during stop/starts, upshifts, and downshifts! a lot of what i thought was minor ecu mapping irritations are now gone.

it's an easy job and well worth the minimal trouble or outlay in costs and i highly recommend it for those with higher milage cars.

Yep, it's BS when any auto manufacturer tells you it's a "lifetime" fluid. I just think they want to be able to make some $ off of you when you need a new transmission years down the road.

MBZ had released a TSB that said the transmission should be serviced (flush fluid via drain lines) sometime back. Perhaps Konigstiger can confirm this. This was performed on my 2004 E55 back in 2006.

iirc, the tsb was related to a possible coolant contamination of the tranny fluid and a flush was ONLY performed if and when a customer complained enough about t/c or shifting problems. i'd be willing to bet that most e55's have not had their tranny fluid changed. if mine was ever done, it wasn't recorded in my service history.

I remember being it as a service you paid for. I still think that most dealers arent doing it. I paid about $150 or so to have the fluid flushed and replaced. It's amazing what it did to the transmission though.
