Are /////AMG's Better Than Their Competition?
Hey guys. I posted this on Benzworld.org, and just wanted to see your guys' opinions.
Excluding supercars manufacturers like Ferrari, Lamborghini, Pangani, Bugatti etc... I always thought Mercedes-Benz's /////AMG lineup was pretty much the greatest in terms of speed, luxury, performance and so on. Maybe I was ignorant towards other makes or didn't study them too much. But in my mind, /////AMG tuned Mercedes-Benz's had no competetion with cars in their range.
But then I started watching people race their Mercedes-Benz's on Youtube. And boy do I have to say, I'm dissappointed. Not saying they are not great, far from that. /////AMG tuned Mercedes-Benz's are absolutely mad. Fast, quick, aggressive, and everything you want. But 90% of the /////AMG's I saw racing other (cheaper) cars, the Mercedes-Benz's lost.
BMW M6's were beating SL65's. As were Corvette ZO6's. M3's were keeping up with SL55's. M5's were crushing nearly all 55 models (SL, CL, CLS, E etc...) RUF tuned Porsche's are beating CL65's. So on and so forth.
And then you'd see these crazy Mercedes fanboys leaving comments like, "Well put a Mercedes McLaren SLR against an M6 or ZO6 and we'll see who wins!" Don't people realize that the McLaren is a $500,000 supercar?
Even still, 65 /////AMG models are $200,000. Whereas an M5 is less than $100,000 and an M6 is slightly over $100,000, and the Corvette ZO6 is in the $70,000 range.
Or comments when an /////AMG tuned CL loses, and people say, "Oh, that CL65 is a grand tourer. It's so heavy."
Yeah. But it costs $200,000. For $96,000 you can get the EXACT same tourer (CL500 or CL550 <whatever body type you prefer I guess>) for over $100,000 less. The reason why you pay more because of the power and for the performance.
So now I'm confused. What is it all for? Are Mercedes-Benz /////AMG models the best you can get without going into supercar territory? Of course the best to everyone is objective, but I'm going by numbers and performance figures. That's what's really starting to get me. Why such high prices, when cars half the amount will end up beating them in the race or outperformaning them? Don't say luxury etc... because you get the same interior in a (insert model) 550 as you do in a (insert model) 65 (just without the /////AMG logos on the floormats, seats, dashboard etc...)
I have a CL65 /////AMG, and I never raced anyone yet. But I would be extremely embarrased if I lost to a BMW M5. Newer M5's can now compete with some Ferrari's. Can an SL65 /////AMG?
Or am I just watching videos with really bad Mercedes-Benz drivers?
I want to see some Mercedes-Benz /////AMG dominance. Or is this just another case of, "You're only paying for the label."?
I am asking this, because I never drove an M tuned BMW or Corvette ZO6 or other cars that are made to compete with /////AMG's (except Aston Martin's and Bentleys.) I've always been a Mercedes-Benz guy. Maybe that's why I was so ignorant towards other cars, thinking no one can compete with them. Can they?
And if you can, post some videos of Mercedes-Benz's tearing it up.

it doesn't take a 65 to beat an M5 a 63 is more than enough (E class and upwards that is) .. a friend of mine made minced meat of his uncles 03-04 M5 with his 55, and all he has on is a better cooling something or something.
don't mind youtube videos, you can't tell what's tuned and whats stock, which one is being driven by a good driver and which one isn't. you want accurate professional comparisons visit official magazine websites and automotive websites, they're not necessarily unbiased but mostly professional and informative ... an E63 does 0-60 in 4.6 whilst an M5 in 4.7 or .8, I don't know much about 1/4 miles though but I know 65s are like the beasts in those drags ... being a grand tourer compromises handling and track abilities not performance because these do 0-60 in just over 4 secs if I'm not mistaking .. an M5 would need 20 more cylinders in addition to its .. Lorry-like 10 ! ... to beat that.
and finaly regarding your obsession, don't worry ! it was towards the right brand all along .. AMG might not be the company to start modefying and tuning family and saloon cars, coz it's actually M power, but they're definitely second to no one now !
as for the Z06s, well yea, they're a bit too much for a 63 to handle, actually even for a 65, but with minor modifications to a 65 I still think it can eat it alive. so if ALL you're looking for is power and NOTHING ELSE .. yea you should go for one.
Sorry this is the lengthiest I could come up with :P

I for one find it hard to believe that you purchased a CL65 and then posted a comparison against M-cars based on 1/4-mile runs you saw on YouTube.
When you bought your CL luxury coupe did you really think that it would be the last word on the drag strip?

I always knew /////AMG's are incredible from my last few. Thing is, I was never in the racing scene. So yes, after seeing the figures my car had and the power it has, I really did think it should be the last word against M tuned BMW's.

To be completely honest. I bought my car, because of the status of /////AMG. I wanted to get the most expensive Mercedes they have. And also becuase the CL is absolutely my favorite.

You can take a dodge neon and get it down to 8 second 1/4 mile speed and blow every stock car ever made off the road for less than the engine costs in your supposed CL65.
I say supposed because of the naive comments you've made...makes it hard to believe you have ever owned a car of any performance level.

To think ANY stock car is going to be faster than cars that are modded/tuned is beyond naive.

Who said anything about tuning the cars? I said M tuned BMW's, which you classify as stock. Just like Mercedes stock cars are tuned by /////AMG. I'm not saying going out after you buy an M series and then tuning it. Same with the ZO6 Corvette.
Why the **** am I even replying to you?
That is twice you were incapable of answering a question.

Ok *******, if you're stupid and can't read that is your problem. Your smudge comments are really starting to **** me off now.

However, I do not beleive any 65 series has to worry about a stock M car.

///AMGs give you performance with the luxury that others dont (i think) and thats what accounts for the price. They never intended for an SL65 to race a Z06, and if the Chevy beats it....who cares? You have amazing seats, a sick stereo, and that three pointed star on the hood
If you want the fastest car for the $$$, Germany is the wrong place to go
just my take though

I'm not arguing I'm actually asking because I need a good answer ... at least from someone who knows what they're talkin about.

even though I completely agree with you and occasionally become the fierce fighter for this battle with american-muscle-fanboys or japanese-gizmo-fanboys, I'm actually coming to a slowing point .. I can feel - and very much like - the difference between the german car and the "other car" .. the difference we pay all this money for ... question is: what is it ?? if it's not power, or speed .... definitely not ONLY the sick stereo or the magical seats ... then what is it?
German cars really are different. My friends has a 350hp WRX and another friend has a 400hp mustang....and I would take my friend's stock S4 over both...hell I even would take my c230k over the mustang
When you drive them (Germans) you just feel....in control?
idk....can't quite place it, but I love it
....and I think my next few cars will be from Germany too

Here is my 500E - not AMG, but it has that "something" you're wondering about.
What Chassis model is yours? I love the new 'Benzs. You must be very proud...
Post some pics - show it off!!!

Hey Jimmy!
Thanks for the compliment!
I was admiring your car earlier, in the picture gallery you posted.
Is your car an E60? I'm thinking of putting on my ducktail, now that Ive seen it on a silver car.

1994 AMG E60 (W124); 1997 SL600; & few others that I cannot fit in here
Thank You, Zorro. That ducktail and other alterations were the works of the first owner. Yes, it is a 1994 E60. As you guess, it is a monster. Glad you like it. w/ smiles Jimmy PS. That's a nice set of wheels on your E500.
