Don't mess with the clip in the back.It holds down the other part of the filter compartment { a tube like thing } to the engine.

Thanks for the post.Changed my oil already , now I just did the engine air filters on my 2009 C300.

I'll be attacking the compartment air filter next.

1) All covers attached and as motor looks when hood is opened.

2) The smaller front cover(with MB emblem) removed. The cover is attached with simple pressure pins underneath and then clips connecting to the bigger cover. Just pull up on the sides of the small cover or front lip to pop up and off.

3) Parts circled in red(flex intake tubes and breather hose) need to be pulled off from engine cover/intake tubes before removing engine cover.

Then grab each intake tube that is part of cover from underneath(red lines) and pull up with a little bit of force. Don't be shy as nothing will break as shown in the next step.

4) Spring clips on bottom of intake tubes/engine(4 overall) cover are what attaches to engine via metal pads as shown circled in red.

5) Removal is complete and now an exposed engine is available to work on.

6) To re-install make sure TB opening of engine cover pops down and seals against TB of engine and reverse all procedures above.
Sorry, I shut down the site I had the images linked to in my original post. The images are now uploaded to this site.

They're showing up on my iMac (10.6.8) and my iPad 2...not sure why you can't see them.

Can you see these? I just panted it this week with the guidance of one of our forum members.

My cover is at the paint shop getting done right now. It is super easy to remove the cover. Just pull straight up and disconnect the vacuum line.

Does anyone have a good suggestion to remove oxidization from the control unit that sits in the middle of the engine cover?

I went to put the motor cover back on today and noticed that the metal piece in the middle of the cover area is pretty dirty and will not come clean. I have tried polishing, buffing and a few other things but it still looks terrible.

Anyone have a suggestion? I would replace it if I could but I am sure it costs a lot. I tried to separate it as well and it does not seem to come apart so dipping it in an acid bath is out of the question.

Thanks

Is it possible to pry the star off and install it back when the job is done?

I think the high heat will melt it.

I second that. You can check for special high heat wrap though maybe?

This tutorial might help. You can paint it with black and silver high heat enamel with some shelf liner to create the carbon fibre effect
