Quote: 100% makes sense- I would have got the 55 but the delta with my discount was very lean (around 14k) so I just sucked it up LOL. Now If I got the 55 I would indeed get the RT box cause, as you mentioned- its pretty easy to pull out and reinstall if needed. My tech did my RaceChip version (its not as aggressive or as aggressive as RT claims) but its only 700 bucks for me. It took him about 45 min to install so do not pay 1k for that job please!! Im not sure where you are located but if in SoCal I can refer you to him or at the least you can get the RaceChip one. Im running RC on my BMW's too- cheap easy bang for the buck tune with a cell phone app to custom change the maps. Think JB4 without the ability to data log or do heavy fuel mods and hardware adds. Its more of a plug, play, and walk away.

They claim 60whp/55tq gains but at the wheels so its more if you adjust to crank like RT does. Its fine for me and now my 63 has the juice!!

Yeah with a non conventionally ordered colour spec with the aero kit and fully loaded with a very slim difference between the 2 unless in a track, I think I made the right decision. That low end launch on the 55 with a tune looked nuts.

Had this spec not been available in the 55 I would’ve gone 63. But in my specific situation it just didn’t justify a 30k gap in price (might’ve been a bit more seeing as I had to ship it into my city)

I actually live out in Canada! But I have a local place that has done some of my other vehicles and they specialize in renntech tunes! Thanks for the advice though!

Any tips on how to care for the engine/car overall? I’ve done some research online and the dealer told me the usual basic don’t go over 4000rpms and try to keep it in comfort as much as possible for the first 1200kms.

This is my first AMG so any tips would be appreciated!!

Make that 1610 KMs as it is a 1000 miles break-in and converting to kilometers is something like 1609.

Quote: Has anyone driven the 55 and 63 back to back? Can you tell much of a difference? If so, where/when? thanks
I briefly test drove both models when deciding. Consensus on similar threads on here seem to say the same thing as I am but:

Visually and sound-wise, the GT63 and GT55 are identical. You could de badge a GT55, and even the biggest AMG enthusiast wouldn’t be able to tell the difference between that and a GT63 without checking engine diagnostics.

Driving them, though, is a slightly different story. The GT63 does feel a bit more rugged and aggressive to very detail focused drivers. But unless you're on a track, the difference is either minimal or totally unnoticeable to the average driver. The GT63 has a bit more of that track car feel (think GTR Pro), while the GT55 isn't far behind. And honestly, one of the key points of this new-gen GT was to make it more usable and practical (like with 4MATIC). Even the GT63, when driven casually around the city, feels refined and civilized, it’s not always a brute.

You start to feel the performance difference when really pushing the throttle. I didn’t get much chance to go hard since I was on city roads, but from what I did feel and what I’ve heard from AMG specialists is that the GT55 has punchier low end torque. It’s the higher RPM range where the GT63 pulls ahead. In my honest opinion, if you're not tracking the car, the performance difference is minimal to negligible. I genuinely believe AMG may have messed up a bit by making the two models so close, aside from engine specs. (And with a simple stage 1 tune, the GT55 puts out similar numbers to the GT63.)

Someone shared a video with me of a stage 1 GT55 racing a stock GT63 on track. You can clearly see the GT63 starts to pull ahead at higher RPMs, roughly 150–200 ft into the run, but off the line and in the early part of the race, the tuned GT55 launches like a beast.

Personally, unless you plan on tracking the car, I don’t see much justification in going for the GT63.

This is essentially the AMG strategy. The lower trim level AMGs, 43, 53 and 55 are tuned more for lower speed everyday driving whereas the 63 is for high speed driving. I mentioned this somewhere before. We had a discussion over on the AMG Private Lounge not too long ago. Somebody who owned a GLE 53 and then upgraded to the GLE 63 complained that the 63 wasn't as responsive around town. AMG itself eventually chimed in and they were saying what I just said. The 53 is designed for lower speeds and to be responsive in everyday mundane driving situations, whereas the 63 is designed to handle high speeds and has the power to easily run at triple digit speeds on the German Autobahn. I don't think that's something many consider when deciding to buy an AMG. I've said before that while I love the 63 AMGs, they are not that great just doodling around town. You can feel that that's not really their purpose. They are much happier and more fun to drive out on the open road at high speeds.

On Renntech website they offer a warranty to cover your tuned powertrain for the length of your factory warranty. You have to contact them to learn the cost.

Makes sense — maybe that’s why I felt the difference was minimal during the test drive around town. It’s really once you get into that 160+kmph range that the extra torque and horsepower of the GT63 start to show. If anything, I’ve always felt the same that the GT55 felt a bit more “torquey” and responsive at lower speeds, while the GT63 felt like it was daring me to hit the highway and just slam the pedal to the floor.
