Exhaust heat shield and reduced transmission temperature!

Just FYI-I installed two Thermotec clamp on exhaust heat shields along the sections that run alongside the transmission and to my surprise the transmission fluid temperature has reduced by an average of 50-70 degrees F!

For those that plan to track your GT, I think this is an extremely cheap and effective upgrade to reduce transmission temperature!

Thanks for the info and tip.
Just came back from Road Atlanta ADA Pro and the cars were able to handle 15 min sessions with one cool down lap one after the other for a few hours with no issues at all.
What kind of temperatures were you seeing on your end and how long of a session are you running?

Hey Eric,

I haven't hit the track yet. My trans temp usually register about 180-195 in city/freeway driving when ambient temperature is around 75-85 degrees.

Since the heat shield installation it has been hovering around 130-140 in the same conditions. My transmission is also taking about 10 minutes longer to get up to temperature.

The exhaust pipes come very close to the transmission at certain areas (0.5" -1"). These heat shields create air gaps between the exhaust and shield shields and transmission.

Thermo-Tec Stainless Steel Clamp-On Heat Shields part number 11675

Summit Racing or Jegs carried them.

Here's the link to Summit:

Now that I think about it taking those two hot 2nd catalysts off has definitely changed the time it takes for car to warm up. Boiler did you cut out ?

Thank you!

was it an easy install? I have a couple of track days coming up and this is of great interest to me. Could you maybe post some pics of the locations you've installed these? The engine bays are pretty crowded and the more info I have the better I feel. Thanks in advance.

yeah it's really easy. The transmission is in the rear of the car. Just remove the under panel and it'll be obvious to you where to put it.

As for the temperature of the trans fluid, it'll eventually stabalize at about 180 degrees, but it'll take a long time to get there because the heat is generated by transmission and not being heated by the exhaust pipes. But on mine it doesn't get any hotter than 185 or so whereas before it exceeded well over 220 at times.

Wow I fee like an idiot.

I keep forgetting the transmission is in the rear. I just automatically keep thinking of cooler lines and such. Thanks for the clarification. Cheers!

I'm assuming you got the 12" lengths X 2?

Also are the fasteners that come with shield sufficient?

Use the links I provided earlier. Those are the ones I use and fits perfectly. Yes the included fasteners work perfectly

Looking to do this mod - would the best time to have this be done when I'm having the secondary cats removed? Is this located in the same general location?

Yes. You need car on a lift for both. But secondary cats are up front and the exhaust you would wrap in rear next to transmission. You have to remove cover and the area to wrap was said to be obvious.

Is there actually an issue with the tranny overheating? Otherwise, i would prefer it warmed quicker and reached the temp the engineers expected. Would have oil grade based around this possibly.

I know the M3/4 F80/82 suffers on track a little.

This is great info, thank you. Have you run into any issues tracking?
