Help with iPod install

I have 2005 C55 and bought kit (B6 782 42 19) from dealer. I read everything I could find on forums and tried install myself. No problem removing components. Pluged in harness and dash display shows iPod connection and recognizes my unit but no sound thru speakers. Also no sound from radio or CD.

I got the installation instruction instructions from a dealer (can't see pictures well becaused faxed) hoping I missed a simple step. I see two things I missed and hoping either would solve my problem.

1. Instructions say to disconnect AUX jack from Comand unit. I tried unpluging everything and even testing wires with ohm meter and I can't determine which one is AUX jack.

2. Instructions say if vehicle does not have telephone (mine does not) to change menu with Star Diagnosis tool to show "Telephone Available". This must be done by dealer.

Can anyone help me determine if either of these would be the source of my problem before I put the car back together and bring it to the dealer?

Thank you. joe

Did you remove the fiber optic cables from the connector that was in the back of the head unit and put them into the connector that is now plugged into the head unit? If you didn't that would explain the problem perfectly, since all sound is transmitted by the fiber optic cables.

They are an orange color, you should see them quickly as something going into the connector, but not the head unit.

I'd bet money that is your problem.

No I did not. I assumed that like all the other wires, they were accounted for with the new harness. I also thought those fiber optic cables were for a CD player or something. It looked like the other end of those were right beside the dash and not connected to anything.

I will check it out as soon as I get home. I sure hope that's it because I'm out of ideas and my dealer wants $350 to install the kit. My car is all apart and eveything else has been easy to do.

I'll post back my results. If it's that simple then I would recommed others try this on their own and save the money towards an E55.

thanks, joe

'mbbodytech' is correct. I did the same thing you did before I looked at the plug and saw the two orange wires that were not connected to the head unit. There is a little clip that you press to release the cables from the connector; you then simply slide it into the new connector that is plugged into your head unit.

And then it was said…… let their be SOUND

The pass through adapter that comes with the ipod kit does not PASS the fiber cables. They must be physically moved over from the old connector to the new connector.

Got it!

Well, the orange fiber optic cables were the problem. You have to transfer them to the new harness. This is not mentioned in the installation instructions but I guess a real MB tech would know this.

It appears I still have to have the dealer change the system to indicate I have a telephone because the only feature that does not work is the phone button on the steering wheel does not change the iPod menu.

Thanks everyone for your help.

If anyone needs help doing this install let me know.

joe

Actually, I have not mounted it yet. That's the only left for me to put back together. The instructions say to mount it between the ac blower and the "A" pillar. joe
