Loose PTT Lever

I have a 2001 E55, and the PTT lever for the voice activation was a little loose. I tried the installation instructions in reverse to remove the lever to see if there is a way to tighten it, however it is REALLY loose now and when I reinstall the lever it rotates up to the position for removal with almost no resistance. Do I need to install a new lever or is there a chance something inside the steering column is not right? There appears to be a plastic tab on the lever itself that keeps it from rotating, but I don't know how large this tab normally is. Should I hear a nice snap when it pops in the correct place? I had to apply quite a bit of force to rotate it to remove it, but I didn't hear anything pop or break.

Any help would be appriciated.
