Retrofitting Phones [incl. UHI] in W163 MLs

Hi

I decided to replace the factory fitted 6310i kit in my wife's European MY2002 W163 ML with the UHI system (fitted as standard in the 2004 Euro MLs) - as the baby had broken her 6310i (by sucking it), and she wanted a newer phone.

Initially I bought MBenzNL's kit, but because I had already installed voice recognition etc, I thought i'd try and do it exactly like the factory. Of course, you can't get one of the looms you needed, so I made it myself, and all I actually used of MBenzNL's kit was the UHI/D2B controller.

I wrote it all up in a document at

http://www.almeida.org/mbstuff

(my COMAND retrofit document is there aswell, and some other older stuff)

Thats my first version of the write up, and tries to document other bits of information I know/discovered about older MLs and about US MLs.

It is missing a couple of part numbers for the screws to mount the phone console to the centre console - I hope to have those soon.

I'd be grateful for any feedback on the document !!

Thanks !

Richard

(ps, I therefore have all the MBenzNL kit parts for fitting a UHI kit to a ML, except the phone controller, and all the 6310i parts for putting a 6310i in a RHD ML (except the microphone/cover spare, which will probably go to ebay soon)

Great writeup. Note that recently we've come across some strange MY2003 RHD W163s in the UK with single coax leading forward from the rear antenna, not using the newer antenna with split leads, contrary to what's indicated in the WIS. JustinP posted some pictures at Benz world in the W163 forum. You may want to add a note somewhere in case other such cars are out there...

PS. If I should come across a UHI harness part number sometime, I'll let you know.

Thanks, that is very strange, as there seem to be all the internal wiring (roof to under seat wiclic and under-seat wiclic to min-uhf behind dash, and a wiclic for GPS behind the dash - I wonder the GPS cable actually goes to - and I wonder if there has been something odd done to those vehicles (new roof or something).

My document generally assumes that you wont be installing this unless you already have COMAND (otherwise integrated phone doesnt give you much on a ML) so i'd be really interested to know if anyone out there has a MY2002 or later ML with the old type of GPS antenna on the roof.

(Wolfgang, on your *great* website you reference to my http://www.ibex.co.uk/mbstuff/SOMETHING - can you please update that to www.almeida.org/mbstuff/XXXX ? (to do with my retrofitting COMAND document) (and also, its not LHD , its RHD)

Thanks
Richard

..................Also Neil Brooks of Braybrooks.co.uk has modified UHi kits similar to what Richard did. I believe he sells them for 550 british pounds. Here is the link.
