Old phone still "works" after getting new phone

My S500/w220/2000 came w/ the Motorola StarTac TDMA phone, and I used that thing for five years because I couldn't upgrade the system and didn't want to have two cell phone #s. But about a year ago I got fed up w/ that old technology and bought a new Motorola V3 Razr GSM phone. I was going to pitch the old StarTac, but stuck it back in the cradle and plugged it in. To my surprise, it works fine for making calls out from the car! Incoming calls go to my new phone, but I think it is great that I can still use the old "hands free" system that came w/ the car. Has anyone else experience this phenomenon?

I vaguely remember this type of phenomenon (10 years in wireless telecom), but I must admit the the memories are blurring together: one phone with two numbers, two phones with one number, etc.); I'll ask one of my colleagues and get back to you. Two important "troubleshooting" questions: (1) did you stay with the same carrier and simply upgrade your phone, or "port out" your number to a new provider, and (2) can you make an outbound call with the new phone? (that would indicate that either one carrier is recognizing two esn's for one phone number, or that you still have some residual service from your former carrier, depending upon your answer to (1).

(1) Yes I did stay with the same carrier and simply upgraded my phone (Tac to Razr) and service (TDMA to GSM).

(2) My new phone works like a dream, both outbound and inbound. The old StarTac in my S500, however, does not receive incomming calls (they go to my Razr), but I can call out w/out a problem from both phones and services.

When calling someone else from my car, their Caller ID shows "Private Call," not my phone #.

I'll ask some colleagues what they surmise is happening, but my gut instinct tells me you should enjoy it while it lasts, and not bring it to your carrier's attention.
