IPOD Integration Q and request for Pix
To a certain extent the volume will be dependent on the recording level when ripping the CD, there is a lot of variation from CD to CD and the car environment seems to emphasize that more than the home.
Some of the sound level concerns you have heard about may be to do with using the headphone output as the aux input where the level is very low and the sound quality in my opinion is terrible. I use a Transpod (I haven't persuaded my wife to let me spend the $500+ for installation of the factory setup
yet) which has a line level output into the aux input and the quality and volume is fine.

As for the volume have you ever considered that maybe some of the people on here are going deaf ?
Only fix for it now is to turn of the ignition for about 30 second and restart the car (rebooting); and pray that the IPOD integration kit relays the signal properly.
Even with this problem, i'd say its still worth it to get it done. Nothing beats being able control IPOD music from the steering wheel...most of the time
